Around the State Recap (USSSA) 3/14-3/15/20

As the coronavirus outbreak cancelled numerous games and events this past weekend, there were still a few games and events that took place. Here we highlight and recap those games at the USSSA sites around the state.

 

Charlotte

Dirtbags Black went 4-0 this past weekend in Charlotte. On Saturday, they notched a 14-4 win over Five Star Vipers and a 20-7 win over our #4 team in North Carolina, the SBA Futures. On Sunday, they rolled to a 16-2 win over the North Lincoln Destroyers and 15-0 win over the Five Star Vipers. The Futures went 1-2-1 this past weekend, tying the North Lincoln Destroyers 12-12 in addition to their loss against Dirtbags Black on Saturday. The fell 17-9 against the South Charlotte Cardinals before scoring an 18-11 win over the Five Star Vipers on Sunday. The South Charlotte Cardinals only participated on Sunday, topping the North Lincoln Destroyers 15-2 in their other game to finish 2-0.

The #7 team in North Carolina, the LKN Hurricanes, went 2-0 on Saturday with an 11-5 win over Mission Baseball - Smith and a 5-3 win over the North Lincoln Destroyers in pool play. The SBA Nationals also went 2-0 with a 13-2 win over East Rowan and a 12-7 win over the North Lincoln Destroyers on Saturday. Mission - Smith notched an 11-5 win over East Rowan in their other pool play game on Saturday. On Sunday, the LKN Hurricanes rolled over East Rowan 21-2, and Mission - Smith topped the SBA Nationals 11-2. In the finals, Mission Baseball - Smith scored a 20-1 win over the LKN Hurricanes.

Our #4 team, the SBA Futures, played up in the 10u age group this past weekend in Charlotte. They have been slightly overmatched, going 0-3 with a 13-0 loss against the #2 team in South Carolina, Team 24 Gamecocks - Clayton, and a 9-0 loss against the #4 team in North Carolina, the LBC Swarm, on Saturday, followed by a 6-4 loss against 10u #15 East Rowan on Sunday.

The #4 team in North Carolina, the LBC Swarm, went 2-0 on Saturday with a 6-5 win over #15 East Rowan and a 9-0 win over 9u #4 team, the SBA Futures, in pool play. East Rowan fell 13-4 against #24 SBA Nationals in their other pool play game. The Nationals fell 2-0 against the #2 team in South Carolina, Team 24 Gamecocks - Clayton, in their other game on Saturday. Team 24 rolled to a 13-0 win over the SBA Futures in their other game on Saturday. The LKN Lightning went 2-0 in Saturday as well with a 4-2 win over the Carolina Reds (SC) and a 9-5 win over the SBA Americans. On Sunday, East Rowan notched a 6-4 win over the 9u SBA Futures in the play-in game. In the semifinals, East Rowan blanked the LBC Swarm 8-0 and the SBA Nationals notched a 13-2 win over the LKN Lightning. In the finals, the SBA Nationals rolled to an 11-0 win over East Rowan.

The #9 team in North Carolina, Carolina Blue Trifecta, went 2-0 on Saturday with a 5-1 win over Tomberlin Blue Rays - Ledford and a 13-0 win over Elite 9 (SC). #22 Union County Crush - Walker also went 2-0 on Saturday with a 5-3 win over Panthers Blue and a 12-0 win over Park Sharon Nationals - Garcia. The Panthers scored a 12-2 win over Park Sharon Nationals - Garcia in their other pool play game on Saturday. The LKN Hurricanes also went 2-0 on Saturday, notching a 10-0 win over the SBA Prospects and an 8-0 win over #21 Mission Vipers - Reyer. The Vipers fell 8-4 against the Prospects in their other game on Saturday. In the semifinals on Sunday, Carolina Blue Trifecta scored a 7-3 win over Park Sharon - Garcia and Crush - Walker blanked the SBA Prospects 10-0. In the finals, Carolina Blue edged Crush - Walker 8-7 to finish 4-0 for the weekend.

The top 4 teams in our 11u age group - #1 SBA Futures, #2 Park Sharon Nationals - Pirro, #3 SBA Nationals, and #4 Five Star Carolina - Jones - all played up in the 12u age group this weekend. On Saturday, the Futures went 1-0-1 on Saturday with a 6-6 tie against the Carolina Regulators and a 9-6 win against the Weddington Blue Ice. Park Sharon - Pirro went 1-1 with a 12-6 loss against the #7 12u team in South Carolina, Team 24 Gamecocks - Bailey, and an 11-1 win over Elite 9 (SC). The SBA Nationals went 0-2 on Saturday, falling 8-5 against Mission Baseball Black and 17-2 against Team 24 - Bailey. On Sunday, the Futures lost in the semifinals against 12u #9 CBA Copperheads Black by the score of 3-1. Park Sharon - Pirro edged Team 24 - Bailey in their opening bracket game by the score of 12-11 but fell 4-2 against the SBA Senators in the semifinals. The Senators had posted an 8-4 win over the SBA Nationals in their opening bracket play game prior to their win over Park Sharon.

The #4 team in North Carolina, the SBA Futures, went 2-0 on Saturday with a 12-0 win over Elite 9 (SC) and a 12-2 over 11u #4 Five Star Carolina - Jones. #9 CBA Copperheads Black went 1-1 on Saturday, scoring a 12-2 win over Mission Baseball Black and falling 5-3 against the SBA Senators. The Senators defeated 11u Five Star - Jones in their other pool play game. In the quarterfinals on Sunday, CBA Copperheads Black scored a 3-1 win over 11u #1 SBA Futures, the SBA Senators defeated 11u #3 SBA Nationals 8-4, and 11u #2 Park Sharon Nationals - Pirro defeated Team 24 Gamecocks - Bailey (SC) 12-11. In the semifinals, Copperheads Black blasted their way to a 17-3 win over the SBA Futures and the SBA Senators defeated Park Sharon 4-2. In the finals, CBA Copperheads Black were able to outlast the SBA Senators, notching a 16-11 win.

 

 

 

Fayetteville

The #6 team in North Carolina, Area Stars Orange, went 2-0 on Saturday in Fayetteville with a 12-4 win over Futures Baseball and a 16-0 win over Rock Solid Blue.

The Wilmington Whitecaps finished as the lone 2-0 team on Saturday in Fayetteville. They scored a 12-1 win over Rock Sold Red and a 14-1 win over the Tri-County Drillers.

The #1 team in North Carolina, Rawlings Prospects NC, went 2-0 in Saturday with a 13-0 win over 11u #6 Coastal Cyclones and a 2-1 win over #14 DPC Academy Gold. DPC blanked Dirtbags Platinum 8-0 in their other game on Saturday.
