USSSA South Carolina Spring Super NIT April 2018 Recap

Some of the best teams in the state of North Carolina were in action this past weekend in Lexington, South Carolina to take on some of the best teams in the Southeast. It was an exciting weekend of baseball filled with some excellent performances and some surprising results that will surely have some impact on our rankings this week. We’ve posted a North Carolina-focused recap of the weekend’s games.

The Asheville Braves – Frye went 1-1 in pool play, scoring a 21-2 win over Bodyshop Baseball and a 17-11 loss to Team 24 Gamecocks. This left them with the #4 seed for bracket play. In the play-in game, the Braves topped the Lake Murray Bombers (SC) 14-11 to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, the Braves were defeated by 15-14 by the G-town Pirates. In the other semifinal, Team 24 topped the Palmetto Storm 20-19. In the finals, Team 24 was able to blast their way to a win with a slow pitch softball-like score of 24-17.

9u

The SBA Canes Red were the lone North Carolina team in the 9u division. They went 0-2 in pool play with an 18-4 loss to the FCA Blueclaws (FL) and a 10-7 loss to the Ninth Inning Dodgers. This left them in the play-in game with the 9th seed for Sunday bracket play. On Sunday, they scored a 9-7 win over the Carolina Yarddawgs in the play-in game, but fell to the Meridian Panthers 10-7 in the quarterfinals. The FCA Blueclaws ended up winning the 9u Majors division, scoring a 16-1 win over the Meridian Panthers in the quarterfinals, a 9-5 win over Gameday Shockwave (SC) in the semifinals and a 7-6 win over Team Georgia in the finals.

The 10u Majors division featured some of the best 10u teams in North Carolina including #1 Canes Baseball NC – Gilchrist, #2 SBA Canes – Marconi, #3 Port City Rebels, #5 Dirtbags Platinum, #10 Carolina Havoc, #18 Mission Vipers Black, and #19 Mission Vipers Gold. Canes – Gilchrist went 2-0 in pool play with an 18-5 win over Team 24 Gamecocks – Bailey (SC) and a 9-4 win over the Augusta Reds (GA). This landed them with the 6th seed for bracket play. SBA Canes – Marconi received the top seed for bracket play after notching an 8-0 win over the Greenville Titans (SC) and an 8-0 win over Predators Columbia NE. Dirtbags Platinum ended up with the #2 seed after an 11-3 win over the Port City Rebels and a 3-0 win over the East Coast Snipers (SC). Port City scored a 10-6 win over Mission Vipers Black in their other pool play game to finish 1-1 and earned the 8th seed. The Vipers Black lost 10-2 to the Carolina Havoc in their other pool play game and ended up with the 16th seed and in the play-in game for bracket play. The Havoc also topped the East Coast Snipers 11-3 in pool play and earned the #3 seed for bracket play. Mission Vipers Gold went 0-1-1 in pool play with a 5-5 tie against the Charleston Revolution (SC) and a 12-9 loss to PRO Prodigy (SC), and fell to the 11th seed in bracket play.

In the play-in game, Mission Black fell to Team 24 Gamecocks – Bailey 13-10 to end their tournament run. In the round of 16, Canes – Gilchrist topped Mission Gold 10-0, Predators Columbus NE defeated the Havoc 8-4, the Greenville Titans scored 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning to give Dirtbags Platinum a heart-breaking 5-4 loss, the Port City Rebels topped PRO Prodigy 10-4, and SBA Canes – Marconi went down to Team 24 6-5. In other round of 16 games, Crusaders Baseball (TN) topped the Charleston Revolution 4-1, Five Star Tigers – Hannah (FL) rolled the Augusta Reds 9-1 and the East Coast Snipers beat Gameday Shockwave 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Canes – Gilchrist beat the Predators 12-2, Port City scored a 15-12 win over Team 24, Crusaders notched a 16-1 win over the Greenville Titans, and Five Star Tigers edged the East Coast Snipers 8-7. That left two NC teams in the semifinals. In the semifinals, however, Crusaders was able to knock off Canes – Gilchrist, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 6th on their way to a 12-9 over North Carolina’s top 10u team. In the other semifinals, Five Star Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to defeat the Rebels 7-6. In the finals, the Crusaders were able to sneak out an 8-6 win against the Tigers.

11u

The 11u Majors division featured some major 11u firepower in #5 Mission Vipers Gold, #6 Big Game 2025, #15 Rock Solid Red, #16 Canes Baseball NC – Simpson, and previously ranked Carolina Athletics. Mission Gold went 1-1 in pool play with an 8-6 win over Rock Solid Red in addition to an 8-2 loss to the East Cobb Astros (GA). They earned the #8 seed for bracket play. Big Game 2025 also went 1-1 in pool play with an 11-3 win over Mission Vipers Black and a 7-2 loss to the Carolina Athletics, and earned the #5 seed for bracket play. The Athletics went 2-0 in pool play with a 7-2 win over Vipers Black in addition to their win over Big Game 2025. This earned the Athletics the 3rd seed for bracket play, while Vipers Black feel to the 12th seed. Canes – Simpson earned the #6 seed for bracket play after going 1-1 in pool play with a 12-2 win over Crusaders Baseball and a 12-2 loss to Five Star Tigers – Demarini (FL). Rock Solid also went 0-2 in pool play with a 15-11 loss to Five Star Elite (GA) in addition to their loss to Vipers Gold. They received the 13th seed for bracket play. Canes Baseball NC – Charlotte went 0-2 in pool play with an 8-2 loss to Crusaders Baseball (TN) and a 15-0 loss to the Five Star Tigers.

In the play-in bracket games, Canes – Simpson scored a 7-1 win over Powdersville Predators, Carolina Athletics won 15-0 over Canes – Charlotte, the Vipers Black topped Big Game 2025 12-3, the East Cobb Astros blasted Rock Solid Red 16-1, and Five Star Elite topped the Vipers Gold 10-6. In the quarterfinals, SGSA Sharks topped Crusaders Baseball 11-3, the Carolina Athletics topped Canes – Simpson 9-6, the East Cobb Astros blanked Vipers Black 8-0, while Five Star Elite topped Five Star Tigers – Demarini 8-0. In the semifinals, the SGSA Sharks ended the Athletics’ run with a 12-4 win, while the East Cobb Astros beat Five Star Elite 15-7. In the finals, the Astros finished their dominant run with a 12-3 win over the SGSA Sharks.

12u #2 Minion looked dominant as ever in pool play, notching a 10-2 win over L3 Force (SC) and a 10-2 win over Carolina Elite Gold to secure the top seed for bracket play. #12 SBA Canes – Mendez also put up an impressive performance in pool play, earning the #2 seed for pool play with an 8-3 win over Stars and Stripes National (SC) and a 13-4 win over Game On East (GA). #16 Rock Solid Red went 0-2 with a 9-8 loss to CMSB Squeeze (GA) and a 9-3 loss to Team 24 Gamecocks 2024 and earned the #12 seed for pool play. #18 Canes Baseball NC – Charlotte went 0-2 on Saturday with a 10-2 loss to the Greenville Bombers (SC) and a 13-12 loss to Green Sox (SC), and earned the 14th seed for bracket play. Carolina Elite Gold also went 0-2 with an 11-4 loss to the Carolina Bruins (SC) in addition to their loss to Minion. They were the 14th seed for bracket play.

In the play-in games, Team 24 topped Rock Solid Red 8-2, Elite Gold beat the Lake Murray Sandstorm (SC) 11-2, the Carolina Bruins topped Canes – Charlotte 12-1, and Game On East defeated SBA Canes – Mendez 9-3. In the quarterfinals, Minion scored a 3-1 win over Green Sox, Team 24 topped Elite Gold 9-1, the Bruins defeated L3 Force 9-5, and Game On East topped the Squeeze 9-8. In the semifinals, Team 24 defeated Minion 8-3 while Game On beat the Bruins 8-5. In the finals, Team 24 was able to pull off a 9-3 win over Game On East to take home the 12u title.
