USSSA Recap 5/5-5/6/18

The weekend at the USSSA sites saw another rained out Super NIT in Kingsport, TN, an-all Mission Vipers final in the 10u age group in Charlotte, as well as the first loss of the spring for 11u #1 Carolina Blue Sox, who rebounded to win the tournament championship in Charlotte. We’ve recapped the weekend’s NC USSSA games as well as provided a look at the North Carolina teams who traveled to Kingsport this past weekend.

 

Charlotte

On Saturday, the Hub City Hops scored a 14-4 win over the Carolina Reds and a 21-7 win over Elite 9 (SC). On Sunday, #2 Lake Norman Vipers scored an 8-4 win over the Hub City Hops and a 12-6 win over Team 24 Gamecocks (SC) which placed them in the finals against the Hops. In the finals, the Hops were able to come away with a 13-5 win over the Vipers.

9u #4 SBA Canes – Pitts went 2-0 on Saturday with a 14-4 win over the MARA Thunder and a 15-0 win over the Mission Vipers. The Mission Vipers scored a 6-5 win over SBA Canes – Goodyear in their other pool play game. In the semifinals on Sunday, Canes – Pitts blanked the Thunder 10-0 while the Vipers scored an 18-1 win over Canes – Goodyear. In the finals, Canes – Pitts topped the Mission Vipers 14-6.

#19 Mission Vipers Black went 2-0 on Saturday with a 12-4 win over CBC and a 13-2 win over the Tega Cay Titans (SC). #20 Mission Vipers Gold went 1-1 on Saturday with a 13-9 win over CBC and an 8-7 loss to the MARA Bolts. In the play-in game, CBC topped the Bolts 12-9. In the semifinals, Vipers Gold topped the Titans 11-8 while the Vipers Black beat CBC 10-2. In the finals, Vipers Gold scored an 8-3 win over Vipers Black.

#1 Carolina Blue Sox went 1-1 on Saturday with a 20-1 win over SBA Canes – Jones and a 7-6 loss to the SBA Canes – Walker. 10u #2 SBA Canes – Marconi played up this weekend and went 2-0 with a 9-5 win over RBA White and a 12-4 win over WCW Black. In the play-in games, the Carolina Blue Sox topped CBC – Cunningham 6-4 while SBA Canes – Walker beat RBA White 11-5. In the semifinals, the Blue Sox topped Canes – Marconi 8-5 and Canes – Walker beat Park Sharon 6-4. In the finals, the Blue Sox got their revenge on Canes – Walker with a 12-2 win.

Carolina Prime 2024 went 2-0 on Saturday with an 8-7 win over Academy Baseball – WCWAA and a 14-7 win over Team 24 Gamecocks – Wilson (SC). CBC – Pavone also went 2-0 in pool play with a 12-8 win over the SBA Grizzlies and a 7-5 win over Team 24- Wilson. The Rawlings Stars went 2-0 in pool play with a 16-3 win over the Belmont Kingsmen and a 2-0 win over Team 24 Gamecocks – Miller (SC). There were 3 different brackets for play on Sunday. In bracket 1, Team 24 2024 topped the On Deck O’s Black 14-5 in the play-in game but lost 7-5 in the finals to SBA Canes – Ritter. In bracket 2, Carolina Prime 2024 beat Team 24 – Miller 5-0 in one semifinal, while WCWAA topped CBC – Pavone 10-8 in the other semifinal. In the finals, Carolina Prime topped WCWAA 7-5. In bracket 3, Team 24 – Wilson topped SBA Grizzlies 12-9 in the play-in game. In the finals, Team 24 – Wilson beat the Rawlings Stars 7-3.

 

Greensboro

#6 Reidsville Luckies went 2-0 in pool play with a 17-16 win over the NC Young Guns and a 15-12 win over the Summerfield Stars. The Stars topped the SF Agents 16-1 while the Young Guns also beat the SF Agents 14-6 in their other pool play games. In bracket play, the Carolina Impact topped GRIT 13-5 while the Luckies beat the Stars 14-6. In the finals, the Luckies rolled to a 16-8 win over the Impact.

The Summerfield Stars went 2-0 in pool play with a 10-9 win over the Carolina Impact and a 9-1 win over the VA Dirtbags. The HYAA Hawks were also 2-0 in pool play, scoring a 2-1 win over the Carolina Red Sox and a 17-4 win over the Pilot Mountain Dirtbags. In bracket play, the Red Sox beat the Stars 8-4 while the Hawks topped the Impact 12-6. In the finals, the Hawks completed the 4-0 weekend with a 10-2 win over the Red Sox.

The Carolina Wildthings went 2-0 on Saturday with a 14-0 win over the Triad Thunder and a 11-2 win over Proehlific Power. The Reidsville Luckies were also 2-0 in pool play after an 11-2 win over the Summerfield Stars and a 8-2 win over the Randolph Regulators. In bracket play, the Luckies topped the Regulators 13-2 while Proehlific Power beat the Wildthings 10-1. In the finals, the Power were able to knock out a 10-4 win over the Luckies to take home the 10u title.

The Triad Thunder went 2-0 in pool play with a 6-2 win over Power Baseball and a 12-2 win over the Pilot Mountain Dirtbags. GRIT went 1-0-1 with a 10-8 win over the Reidsville Luckies and a “0-0 tie” (presumably rain out) against the Piedmont Patriots. On Sunday, GRIT topped Proehlific Power 17-2 while the Triad Thunder again beat the Pilot Mountain Dirtbags, this time by the score of 12-4. In the finals, GRIT topped the Thunder 12-4.

The Pilot Mountain Dirtbags went 2-0 on Saturday with a 5-4 win over King Kryptonite and a 6-0 win over the Carolina Hitmen. 4G3 also went 2-0 in pool play with a 6-4 win over the Carolina Red Sox and a 15-1 win over the NCBA Yankees. In the play-in games, King Kryptonite topped the Hitmen 12-1 while the Red Sox beat the NCBA Yankees 9-8. In the semifinals, King Kryptonite topped 4G3 11-3 while the Dirtbags beat the Red Sox 8-0. In the finals, King Kryptonite got some revenge on the Dirtbags with a 12-4 win.

 

Kingsport, TN

#17 Carolina Red Sox – Jones went 1-1 this weekend in Kingsport. They scored an 11-9 win over Tribe Baseball Maroon (TN) and were defeated 8-6 by the Beehive Stars Scout (TN). #15 Haywood Havoc went 0-2 in pool play with a 6-0 loss to the East Tennessee Brigade and an 11-4 loss to the Knoxville Stars (TN), who are currently ranked 1st nationally in USSSA’s 9u AAA Power Rankings.

#1 Canes Baseball NC – Gilchrist went 2-0 on Saturday, scoring a 12-4 win over the Tennessee Braves and a 7-5 win over the West Virginia Gamers. #11 GRIT – Koonin went 1-1 with an 11-2 win over Vault Baseball (TN) and a 10-5 loss to the Knoxville Stars (TN).

#7 Big Game 2025 went 2-0 in their 2 games in Kingsport, notching a 10-3 win over the West Virginia Gamers and a 9-7 win over Elite Baseball. The Carolina Travelers went 0-1 with an 8-5 loss to the Asheville Braves. The Braves fell 9-2 to the Knoxville Stars in their other pool play game.

Golden Spikes went 1-1 in pool play with a 7-5 loss to BC Athletics (TN) and an 8-6 win over the Lake Murray Sandstorm (SC).

 

Morganton

The Lincoln County River Rats went 3-o this weekend with a 19-6 win over Equip, a 21-0 win over the RBA Heels, and a 17-2 win over Equip in the finals.

RBA went 2-0 on Saturday with a 7-4 win over Equip and a 21-0 win over the Morganton Venom. Heat Black also went 2-0 in pool play with a 24-1 win over Morganton Venom and an 11-5 win over Equip. Athlete’s Lab Crushers went 2-0 as well on Saturday, scoring a 15-5 win over the Asheville Braves and a 19-7 win over the Franklin Panthers. In the Gold bracket play-in game, the Carolina Travelers beat Golden Spikes 9-1. In the semifinals, Athlete’s Lab topped Heat Black 13-0 while RBA edged the Travelers 12-11. In the finals, Athlete’s Lab completed their undefeated weekend with an 11-2 win over the Crushers.

Athlete’s Lab Crushers went 2-0 with a 13-5 win over RBA Heels White and a 20-3 win over Heat Black. The DC Vipers also went 2-0 on Saturday with a 15-12 win over the Lake Norman Dingers and a 16-2 win over the RBA Heels Blue. In the Gold bracket, the DC Vipers topped the Asheville Braves 8-6 while Athlete’s Lab beat the RBA Heels White 11-5. In the finals, the DC Vipers rolled to a 13-1 win over Athlete’s Lab.

Golden Spikes went 2-0 on Saturday, scoring a 10-0 win over the SBA Canes 2025 and a 15-4 win over the WNC Thunder. The McDowell Titans also went 2-0 with a 12-2 win over the AC Outlaws and an 11-2 win over WCW Red. Diamond Mine also went 2-o in pool play with a 5-1 win over RBA Heels Blue and an 11-7 win over the WNC Thunder. In the Gold bracket play-in games, the Statesville Sluggers topped NC Swat 12-8 and RBA Heels Blue topped Diamond Mine 9-4. In the semifinals, the McDowell Titans rolled to a 15-0 win over the RBA Heels Blue, while Golden Spikes notched a 9-1 win over the Sluggers. In the finals, Golden Spikes scored a 15-0 win over the McDowell Titans.

RBA Heels Blue were the only undefeated team in pool play after an 11-6 win over Heat Baseball and a 7-4 win over Diamond Mine. Equip Sports went 1-1 in pool play following an 8-7 loss to WCW and an 8-7 win over Diamond Mine. In the play-in games, Heat Baseball blasted a 20-6 win over WCW and Equip Sports blanked Diamond Mine 8-0. In the semifinals, Equip Sports topped RBA Heels Blue 11-3 while RBA Heels White beat Heat Baseball 7-2. In the finals, Equip Sports was able to sneak out a 5-4 win over RBA Heels White.

Athlete’s Lab Crushers went 2-0 on Saturday with a 10-7 win over the McDowell Titans and an 18-3 win over WCW. In the play-in game on Sunday, the Stingrays topped WCW 21-6. In the semifinals, the McDowell Titans beat Diamond Mine Camo 11-7 while Athlete’s Lab edged past the Stingrays 2-1. In the finals, Athlete’s Lab blanked the Titans with an 8-0 win to complete their undefeated weekend.
