USSSA Recap 5/26-5/27/18

USSSA had a few sites going this past Memorial weekend. Featured at the various sites were several top 10 and 20 teams, including a top 10 match up in the 13u age group between #3 Knights Prime and #7 Dirtbags – Smith. Check out our recap of the weekend’s games.

Charlotte

#3 Lake Norman Vipers went 2-0 on Saturday with a 22-1 win over Elite 9 (SC) and a 12-1 win over the SP Sabres. Team 24 Gamecocks (SC) also went 2-0 in pool play with a 7-4 win over Kings Mountain Storm and a 14-2 win over the WV Knuckleheads. In the play-in games, the Knuckleheads topped the SP Sabres 13-6 while the Storm topped Elite 9 21-3. In the semifinals, the Vipers beat the Knuckleheads 7-3 while Team 24 edged the Storm 8-6. In the finals, the Vipers completed an undefeated weekend with an 11-9 win over Team 24.

The Weddington Blue Ice went 2-0 on Saturday with a 6-5 win over SBA Canes – Goodyear and a 11-0 win over the WV Kunckleheads. The Myers Park Rebels went 1-0 with a 14-3 win over SBA Canes – Goodyear. In bracket play, the Blue Ice topped Canes – Goodyear 6-3 while Myers Park topped the Knuckleheads 21-2. In the finals, Myers Park scored an 11-5 win over the Blue ice.

The WV Knuckleheads went 2-0 on Saturday with a 10-5 win over Elite 9 (SC) and a 17-8 win over the MARA Bolts. Equip was also 2-0 in pool play with an 11-10 win over RBA Blue and a 12-7 win over the Carolina Patriots. In the play-in games, the Bolts topped Elite 9 4-3 while RBA Blue scored a 10-9 win over the Carolina Patriots. In the semifinals, the Bolts got revenge on the Knuckleheads with a 9-6 win, while Equip again topped RBA Blue, this time by the score of 8-4. In the finals, the MARA Bolts were able to score a 12-5 win over Equip to take the 1ou title.

#12 Vision Bandits went 2-0 on Saturday with a 10-2 win over the Hickory Hurricanes and a 15-0 win over Canes Charlotte. The Canes topped the MARA Lightning 14-5 in their other pool play game while the Hurricanes scored a 12-6 win over the Lightning in their other pool play game. In the semifinals, the Canes but the Hurricanes 10-4 while the Bandits blanked the Lightning 8-0. In the finals, the Bandits scored a 10-5 win over the Canes to finish the weekend 4-0.

#20 Canes Charlotte went 2-0 in pool play with a 20-0 win over the WCWAA Drillers and a 9-5 win over SBA Canes – Thacker. Crusaders Baseball (TN) also went 2-0 in pool play with a 9-1 win over Southern Athletics and a 8-6 win over the On Deck O’s – Black. In the semifinals, Canes Charlotte blanked the On Deck O’s – Black 8-0 while the Crusaders topped Southern Athletics 6-5. In the finals, Canes Charlotte was able to knock off the Crusaders by the score of 9-4.

#15 Canes Charlotte went 2-0 in pool play with a 8-5 win over Team 24 Gamecocks (SC) and an 11-1 win over HQ4 Clippers Grey. Rawlings West also went 2-0 with a 4-2 win over the Charlotte Nationals and a 5-1 win over the South Charlotte Braves – Oliver. In the play-in games, SBA Canes – Cruz topped the HQ4 Clippers Grey 7-2 while the South Charlotte Braves – Oliver scored a 4-2 win over the Charlotte Nationals. In the semifinals, the Braves knocked off Rawlings West 5-2 while Canes Charlotte took an 8-5 win over SBA Canes – Cruz. In the finals, Canes Charlotte completed an undefeated weekend with a 10-1 win over the South Charlotte Braves – Oliver.

 

Greensboro

The Carolina Wildthings went 2-0 in pool play with an 8-2 win over Proehlific Power and a 6-3 win over the Randolph Regulators. The Luckies were also 2-0, scoring a 13-5 win over the Triad Thunder and an 8-2 win over the Regulators. In the play-in game, the Regulators topped Proehlific Power 5-3. In the semifinals, the Wildthings scored a 2-1 win over the Regulators while the Luckies rolled to a 15-0 win over the Thunder. In the finals, the Wildthings used sold defense and pitching to notch a 7-1 win over the Luckies.

The Virginia Militia were 2-0 in pool play with an 11-2 win over Power Baseball and an 8-5 win over the Triad Thunder. The Triad Titans fell 21-3 to Power Baseball and 10-2 to the Thunder in the other two pool play games. In bracket play, the Thunder topped Power Baseball 17-5 while the Militia scored a 7-3 win over the Titans. In the finals, the Militia edged out the Thunder 3-2 to take the 11u title.

#3 Knights Prime went 2-0 on Saturday with a 13-5 win over Rockies – Hawks and a 10-9 win over Rockies – Mayhew. #7 Dirtbags – Smith also went 2-0 in pool play with a 12-4 win over Rockies – Hawks and a 14-3 win over Rockies – Mayhew. In the semifinals, Knights Prime topped Rockies – Mayhew 13-7 while Dirtbags – Smith edged out Rockies – Hawks 5-4. In the finals, Knights Prime finished a 4-0 weekend with an 11-3 win over Dirtbags – Smith.

 

Oak Island

Leland National went 2-0 in pool play with a 18-0 win over the Ogden Hurricanes and a 14-6 win over the Wallace Dirt Dogs. The Carolina Impact also went 2-0 in pool play, scoring an 8-3 win over the Etown Express and a 15-0 win over the Wallace Dirt Dogs. The Wilmington Whitecaps went 1-1 in pool play with an 11-9 win over the Leland Lugnuts and an 11-2 loss to Leland National. In the quarterfinal play-in games, the Wilmington Whitecaps scored a 23-1 win over the Leland Lugnuts, Etown Express topped the Dirt Dogs 21-6 and the Carolina Impact rolled to a 17-2 win over the Carolina Impact. In the semifinals, the Whitecaps notched a 9-7 win over Leland National while Etown Express edged out the Impact 13-12. In the finals, the Whitecaps were able to sneak out their own 1-run victory with a 14-13 win over the Express.

#18 Piemont Panthers went 2-0 in pool play, scoring an 11-2 win over the Cape Fear Mayhem and a 15-3 win over the EC Elite. The Elizabethtown Express also went 2-0 in pool play with a 12-5 win over EC Elite and an 8-5 win over the Luckies. In the play-in games, the Luckies topped the Robeson Eliminators 14-8 while the Cape Fear Mayhem scored an 8-7 win over the EC Elite. In the semifinals, the Express notched an 11-5 win over the Luckies while the Panthers rolled to a 9-1 win over the Mayhem. In the finals, the Panthers completed their undefeated weekend with a 6-1 win over the Express.

The NSA Prospects were the lone undefeated team in pool play, with an 11-6 win over Dirtbags Coastal and a 9-3 win over the Elizabethtown Express. The 9u Coastal Cyclones played up this weekend and went 1-1 in pool play with a 7-3 loss against Dirtbags Coastal and a 17-9 win over Elite Baseball. In the play-in games, the Express topped the 9u Coastal Cyclones 13-3 while Elite Baseball beat the 10u Coastal Cyclones 6-2. In the semifinals, Dirtbags Coastal scored a 7-6 win over the Express, while the NSA Prospects beat Elite Baseball 12-5. In the finals, the NSA Prospects completed an undefeated tournament run with a 6-2 win over the Dirtbags.

11u #14 SBA Canes – Erwin went 2-0 on Saturday with an 8-5 win over the Wilmington Riptide and an 11-3 win over the Brunswick Core. The Piedmont Patriots went 0-2 in their two pool play games with a 5-1 loss to the Core and a 15-4 loss to the Riptide. In the semifinals, Canes – Erwin rolled to a 12-1 win over the Patriots while the Core topped the Riptide 6-3. In the finals, SBA Canes – Erwin went to extra innings to defeat the Brunswick Core 9-8 in 7 innings.

Fortnite went 2-0 with an 8-5 win over the Carolina Fleet (SC) and a 20-5 win over the Pro-Fit Spartans. The Carolina Bruins (SC) also went 2-0 in pool play with a 12-1 win over Pro-Fit and a 4-3 win over Copperheads – Gaffney, who topped Elite Baseball 21-0 in their other pool play game. The Sandhills Stingrays were 2-0 in pool play after a 6-5 win over the Carolina Vipers White and a 10-0 win over Elite Baseball. In Gold bracket play, Fortnite topped the Stingrays 11-3 while the Copperheads beat the Bruins 12-4. In the finals, Fortnite blanked the Copperheads 8-0 to take home the title.
