USSSA Recap 4/21-4/22/18

Many top 20 teams were in action at the different USSSA sites with some exciting games including a match-up of top 5 12u teams in Charlotte. We continued to see some dominant performances from some of our top teams such as 8u #2 Lake Norman Vipers and 9u #2 SBA Canes – Simmons. Check out our recap of the weekend’s games.

 

Charlotte

#2 Lake Norman Vipers went 3-0 on Sunday, scoring a 17-2 win over the Carolina Reds, a 21-9 win over Elite 9, and a 16-1 win over the Carolina Reds.

#2 SBA Canes – Simmons went 2-0 on Saturday with an 11-0 win over the Carolina Reds and a 19-0 win over CBC. They followed that up with an 8-2 win over the Carolina Reds and a 14-3 win over the MARA Thunder on Sunday.

The Carolina Reds went 2-0 on Saturday, scoring a 13-7 win over the SBA Canes and a 13-1 win over Elite 9. The L-town Lightning was also 2-0 with a 13-8 win over the SBA Canes and a 8-0 win over the LKN Dingers. On Sunday, Elite 9 scored a 5-4 win over SBA to reach the semfinals. In the semifinals, the LKN Dingers topped L-town 7-6 while the Carolina Reds edged Elite 9 12-11. In the finals, the Reds completed an undefeated weekend with a 13-5 win over the Dingers.

#5 Mission Vipers Gold went 2-0 in pool play with a 13-3 win over Elite 9 and a 9-6 over #14 Canes Baseball NC – Simpson. The Canes went 1-1 on Saturday with a 9-1 win over SBA Canes – Walker in their other pool play game. Canes Baseball NC – Charlotte also went 2-0 in pool play with a 13-2 win over SBA Canes – Jones and an 8-1 win over Mission Vipers Black. In bracket play, Canes – Simpson scored a 15-4 win over Mission Vipers Black to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, the Carolina Athletics topped Mission Vipers Gold 7-2, while Canes – Simpson beat Canes – Charlotte 18-6. In the finals, Canes – Simpson blanked the Carolina Athletics 10-0.

#4 Park Sharon Nationals went 2-o on Saturday with an 18-1 win over #18 Canes Baseball NC – Charlotte and a 14-2 win over Academy Baseball – WCWAA. Canes – Charlotte won their other pool play game 10-2 over SBA Canes – Thacker. Team 24 Gamecocks – Brown (SC) also went 2-0 in pool play, notching a 9-6 win over the Carolina Chaos and a 13-2 win over the On Deck O’s Black. On Sunday, Canes – Charlotte topped Team 24 9-6 to reach the final against Park Sharon. Park Sharon was able to record a 12-6 win over Canes – Charlotte in that final. Notably, 12u #1 Minion also played on Sunday and went against Park Sharon and #14 SBA Canes – Mendez. In a bit of a surprise, Minion lost 8-6 to Park Sharon and 6-4 to SBA Canes – Mendez. Canes – Mendez also dropped a 12-5 decision against Team 24 Gamecocks – Brown on Sunday.

#7 Carolina Vandals went 2-0 on Saturday with a 13-5 win over GRIT and a 13-5 win over the Triad Young Guns. #8 Carolina Young Guns went 1-1 in pool play with an 18-3 win over the Oak Ridge Braves and a 17-13 loss to #10 Summerfield Stars. The Stars also had a 17-17 tie against the Luckies in pool play. The Luckies notched a 13-8 win over the Oak Ridge Braves in their other pool play game. In the quarterfinals, the Luckies defeated GRIT 11-3, the Carolina Impact took out the Oak Ridge Braves 15-5, the Summerfield Stars beat the Young Guns 14-6 and the Vandals toped the Triad Young Guns 14-4. In the semifinals, the Luckies beat the Impact 12-4 while the Stars topped the Carolina Vandals 14-10. In the finals, the Luckies got the better of the stars in their rematch, scoring an 18-10 victory to bring home the 8u title.

#7 Five Star Carolina – Hilton went 2-0 in pool play with a 7-5 win over the Davidson County Rippers and a 5-4 win over the Dirtbags (VA). The Kernerville Cyclones were also 2-0 in pool play, scoring a 16-3 win over the Pilot Mountain Dirtbags and an 11-10 win over the GBC Prospects. In the quarterfinals, the Dirtbags topped GBC 8-7, the Rippers steamrolled the Carolina Strikers 20-1, and the Cyclones topped the Pilot Mountain Dirtbags 13-5. In the semifinals, Five Star scored a 10-2 win over Dirtbags VA and the Rippers notched a 13-5 win over the Cyclones. In the finals, Five Star continued to roll with a 16-9 win over the Rippers.

The Summerfield Stars went 2-0 on Saturday with a 10-8 win over the Pilot Mountain Dirtbags and a 13-3 win over the Randolph Regulators. The Knockouts also went 2-o in pool play with a 6-2 win over the GBC Prospects and a 14-8 win over the Triad Thunder. Proehlific Power went 1-0-1 in pool play with a 16-2 win over the Dirtbags and a 8-8 tie against Big Cats. In bracket play, Big cats topped Summerfield 16-9 in the play-in game. In the semifinals, the Randolph Regulators beat the Knockouts 14-7 and the Power scored a 7-4 win over Big Cats. In the finals, the Power were able to get past the Regulators, securing an 8-4 win.

#4 Five Star Carolina – Neyra went 2-o in pool play, with an 18-4 win over #6 Big Game 2025 and a 26-9 win over the Piedmont Patriots. Big Game 2025 won their other pool play 16-1 against GRIT. The Kernersville Bulldogs were also 2-0 in pool play scoring a 9-8 win over the Patriots and a 12-4 win over Proehlific Power. The Patriots topped GRIT 11-5 on Sunday in the play-in to reach the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, 10u #17 GRIT – Koonin topped the Power 9-3, Five Star beat the Pilot Mountain Dirtbags 14-2, the Bulldogs beat the Patriots 9-4 and Big Game 2025 beat the Rawlings Stars Prospects 2025 8-0. In the semifinals, Five Star beat GRIT – Koonin 11-3 and Big Game 2025 topped the Bulldogs 8-3 to set up a top 10 match up in the finals. In the finals, Five Star rode dominant pitching and defense to a 6-1 win over Big Game 2025.

#7 Five Star Carolina – Shelton went 2-0 in pool play with a 9-1 win over Power Baseball and a 12-3 win over the NC Young Guns. The Carolina Red Sox also went 2-o in pool play with a 9-1 win over Outlaw Baseball and a 10-0 win over the Bengals. D1 Performance Academy went 2-0 in pool play with an 11-2 win over Team VA and a 7-2 win over Bengals. Spartans – Campbell also finished 2-0 in pool play with a 21-0 win over the Reidsville Luckies and a 12-9 win over the NCBA Royals. In bracket play, the Spartans topped Five Star Carolina – Smith 5-4 in the play-in game. Five Star Carolina – Shelton topped D1 Performance 8-7 in one semifinal while the Red Sox edged the Spartans 5-2 in the other. In the finals, Five Star Carolina – Shelton ran away with a 19-1 win over the Red Sox.

 

Morganton

The Lincoln County River Rats went 2-o on Saturday with a 16-1 win over the Asheville Braves and a 20-3 win over Equip. The Venom Stars also went 2-0 with a 17-1 win over the RBA Heels and a 13-5 win over Equip. On Sunday, Equip topped the RBA Heels 14-9 in the play-in game. In the semifinals, the Braves beat the Venom Stars 11-2 while the River Rats topped Equip 17-7. In the finals, the Braves were able to outlast the River Rats on their way to a 16-10 win.

There were 3 undefeated teams after pool play in the 9u age group: Athlete’s Lab Crushers, Heat Black, and Heat Red. Athlete’s Lab defeated the Carolina Crushers 15-2 and the Morganton Venom 19-1, Heat Black beat the Cherryville Bombers 15-2 and the McDowell Titans 15-4, and Heat Red topped the Franklin Panthers 17-2 and the CCBA Bombers 25-4. On Sunday, the Venom Stars topped RBA 14-6 in one play-in game while Heat Red beat the McDowell Titans 12-0 in the other play-in game. In the semifinals, Heat Red beat Heat Black 8-4 while Athlete’s Lab Crushers edged the Venom Stars 10-9. In the finals, Heat Red was able to secure a one-run 7-6 win over Athlete’s Lab to complete their undefeated weekend.

Elite Baseball was the only undefeated team after pool play, scoring an 11-1 win over Crosstrain and a 9-1 win over Spartans – Speaks. On Sunday, Diamond Mine topped the Venom Stars 4-1 to reach the semifinals while RBA Heels Blue scored a 5-4 win over Spartans – Speaks in their play-in game to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, Diamond Mine notched a 12-5 win over RBA Heels White, while Elite Baseball rolled to an 8-2 win over RBA Heels Blue. In the finals, Elite Baseball continued the stout defensive play with a 9-2 win over Diamond Mine.

There were 4 undefeated teams after pool play in the 11u age group. #13 Lake Norman Hurricanes knocked off RBA Heels Blue 8-0 and WNC Thunder 14-4, Diamond Mine edged the Carolina Renegades 3-2 and blanked the AC Outlaws 10-0, WCW Black scored a 13-4 win over the Statesville Sluggers and a 18-0 win over NC SWAT, and RBA Heels White notched a 15-0 win over the Outlaws and a 10-4 win over WCW Red. In Gold bracket play, the Lake Norman Hurricanes beat RBA Heels Blue 9-8 and RBA White topped the Carolina Renegades to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, Lake Norman scored an 8-0 win over WCW Black while Diamond Mine edged RBA Heels White 5-4. In the finals, Lake Norman continued to roll with an 11-3 win over Diamond Mine.

RBA Heels White went 2-0 in pool play with a 9-3 win over WCW and a 15-2 win over Elite Baseball. The Carolina Cobras also went 2-0 on Saturday with a 8-0 win over WCW and a 10-6 win over Equip Sports. In bracket play on Sunday, the Lake Norman Hurricanes blanked Elite Baseball 10-0 while RBA Heels Blue topped WCW 6-5 in the play-in games to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, the Cobras blanked the Hurricanes 6-0 while RBA Heels White topped RBA Heels Blue 4-2. In the finals the Cobras completed their 4-0 weekend with a 10-2 win over the RBA Heels White.

Heat Baseball Black went 2-0 on Saturday with a 17-4 win over WCW and a 15-2 win over RBA Heels Blue. Athelete’s Lab Crushers also went 2-0 on Saturday with a 5-4 win over WCW and a 6-5 win over RBA Heels Blue. On Sunday, Heat Baseball Black went 2-0 with a 14-1 win over WCW and a 7-4 win over Athlete’s Lab Crushers to finish 4-0 for the weekend.

 

Wilmington

NSA went 2-0 on Saturday with a 12-4 win over the Wilmington Whitecaps and a 15-7 win over the Ogden Hurricanes. The Whiteville Wolfpack also went 2-0 in pool play, scoring a 21-15 win over the Elizabethtown Express and a 6-4 win over the Leland Lugnuts. In bracket play, the Express topped the Lugnuts 13-8 in one play-in game, while the Whitecaps beat the Hurricanes 22-7 in the other play-in game. In the semifinals, the Express was able to get past the Wolfpack 8-5 while the Whitecaps topped NSA 10-2. In the finals, the Whitecaps were able to edge out the Express 9-8 to take home the 8u title.

The Port City lil Rebels went 1-1 on Saturday with an 18-3 win over Rock Solid Blue and a 21-2 loss to the Elizabethtown Express. The Express lost 12-4 to the Cape Fear Mayhem in their other pool play game, while Rock Solid topped Cape Fear 12-11. In bracket play, Cape Fear topped Port City 7-5 while the Express beat Rock Solid 11-2. In the finals, the Express was able to beat out Cape Fear 7-2 to win the 9u crown.

#10 Port City Rebels went 2-0 on Saturday with a 10-4 win over the NSA Prospects and a 14-1 win over the Elizabethtown Express. The Wilmington Wahoo also went 2-o on Saturday with a 11-1 win over T2G Aces and a 17-2 win over the Coastal Cyclones. In bracket play, the Rebels topped Dirtbags – Coastal 14-7 while the Wahoo slipped past the NSA Prospects 9-8. In the finals, Port City completed the undefeated weekend with a 9-1 win over the Wahoo.

11u

Pirates Elite went 2-o on Saturday with a 10-2 win over T2G Hit-Men and an 8-5 win over the Brunswick Core. The Core also topped the Hit-Men 23-2. On Sunday, the Core agains beat the Hit-Men 10-2 to reach the finals. In the finals, the Core avenged their Saturday loss and scored a 9-3 win over the Pirates Elite.

12u

Dirtbags Elite Coastal went 1-1 on Saturday with a 21-6 win over the Clinton Colts and a 5-2 loss to the Wilmington Riptide. The Colts defeated Rock Solid White 9-4 and the Riptide lost 7-6 to Rock Solid in their other pool play games. On Sunday, the Dirtbags blanked Rock Solid 4-0 in one semifinal while the Riptide got past the Colts 5-2 to reach the finals. In the finals, the Dirtbags were able edge out the Riptide and score a 7-4 victory.
