Top Gun Winter Nationals Recap 2018

Teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia descended on Georgetown, South Carolina this past weekend to compete at the Top Gun Winter Nationals. 5 ranked teams, including 13u #1 Dirtbags MVP. Here we provide a brief recap of the games this past weekend from South Carolina.

8u

Two North Carolina teams, the LL Coastal Cyclones and the Ogden Hurricanes, made the trip to Georgetown, SC this past weekend to compete in the 8u age group at the Top Gun Winter Nationals. On Saturday, both the Cyclones and the Hurricanes went 1-1 with the Cyclones topping the Hurricanes 12-11 in their head-to-head match up, and the Cyclones falling 13-11 against Line Drive Black (GA) and the Hurricanes blasting their way to a 15-2 win over the Edgefield County Titans (SC). This landed the Hurricanes the #2 seed for bracket play with the Cyclones scoring the #3 seed.

In the #3/6 play-in game on Sunday, the Cyclones rolled to a 16-1 win over the Sand Sharks (SC) to reach a semifinal rematch against the Hurricanes. In the rematch, the Hurricanes avenged their Saturday loss, scoring an 11-9 win over the Cyclones to reach the finals. In the finals, the Hurricanes fell 9-3 against Line Drive Black.

#7 Triple Crown Lookouts finished off their fall season with a title at the Winter Nationals.

#7 Triple Crown Lookouts was the sole NC representative in the 4-team 9u D1 division this past weekend. They went 1-1 on Saturday, scoring a 9-1 win over Team 24 Gamecocks - Clayton (SC) and a 4-0 loss against the Carolina Titans (SC), which earned them the #2 seed for bracket play on Sunday. In the semifinals, the Lookouts rolled to a 10-3 win over the Titans to reach the finals. In the finals, the Lookouts scored another win over Team 24, this time by the score of 13-3 to take home the 9u D1 title.

Open

Three NC teams, the Cabarrus Bandits, Dry Pond Baseball, and NCABC Fungo - Piscorik, took part in the 6-team 9u Open division in Georgetown this past weekend. In pool play, Fungo - Piscorik went 2-0 with a 13-7 win over Line Drive Blue (GA) and a 14-1 win over the Cabarrus Bandits, and earned the #2 seed for bracket play. The Bandits scored a 7-6 win over Line Drive Blue in their other pool play game and earned the #4 seed for bracket play. Dry Pond Baseball went 1-1 in pool play with a 13-5 loss against Line Drive Black (GA) and a 13-3 win over the Myrtle Beach Rays (SC), and earned the #3 seed for bracket play.

In the #4/5 play-in game on Sunday, the Bandits notched a 4-3 win over Line Drive Blue. In the #3/6 play-in game, the Myrtle Beach Rays topped Dry Pond 4-1. In the semifinals, the Cabarrus Bandits fell 15-0 against Line Drive Black, while Fungo - Piscorik notched a 9-1 win over the Myrtle Beach Rays. In the finals, Line Drive Black threw another shut out, their 3rd in 4 games, scoring a 6-0 win over NCABC Fungo - Piscorik.

Open

Three NC-based teams, #16 Carolina Titans, the North Carolina Warhawks and the Cape Fear Mayhem, were in the 8-team 10u Open division this past weekend at the Winter Nationals. On Saturday, the Titans went went 1-1, falling 11-1 against 37-3 Team 24 Gamecocks - Ashley (SC) and a 13-3 win over SC Jets Garnet, and earned the 4th and final spot in the Gold bracket for Sunday. The Cape Fear Mayhem went 0-2 with a 17-0 loss against Line Drive Black (GA) and a 16-3 loss against the North Carolina Warhawks. The Warhawks scored a 13-1 win over East Coast Snipers - Willoughby (SC) in their other pool play game on Saturday and earned the #2 seed in the Gold bracket.

In the Gold bracket semifinals, the Carolina Titans topped Line Drive Black 5-3 and Team 24 - Ashley topped the Warhawks 8-4. In the finals, Team 24 - Ashley finished off an undefeated weekend with a 13-1 win over the Carolina Titans.

4 North Carolina teams (Carolina Rampage Baseball, NSA Braves, Carolina Flight (EW), and NSA Straight Gas) were in the 5-team 10u D3 division in Georgetown this past weekend. the Carolina Flight earned the top seed in the Gold bracket after scoring an 11-0 win over the NSA Braves and a 9-3 win over the Rampage in pool play. The Braves topped Team 24 Gamecocks - Wilson (SC) 11-9 in their other pool play to earn the #4 seed for bracket play. The Rampage scored an 13-11 win over NSA Straight Gas in their other pool play and earned the #3 seed. NSA Straight Gas fell 6-0 against Team 24 in their other pool play game and fell to the #5 seed for Sunday bracket play.

In the #4/5 play-in game on Sunday, the NSA Braves topped NSA Straight Gas 12-5 to earn a trip to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the Carolina Rampage scored an 8-2 win over Team 24 - Wilson and the Carolina Flight rolled to a 15-6 win over the NSA Braves. In the finals, Carolina Rampage Baseball enacted some revenge on the Flight, scoring an 8-3 win to take home the 10u D3 title.

11u

6 teams from North Carolina including #8 Port City Rebels, #15 Rock Solid Red, Aces - Edwards, the Belmont Bombers, the Cleveland Wildcats, and the Fuquay Titans competed in the 11-team 11u division. The Port City Rebels earned the #3 seed in the Gold bracket with a 10-7 win over the Cleveland Wildcats and 20-13 win over Line Drive (GA). Rock Solid Red earned the #5 seed in the Gold bracket after going 1-1 in pool play with a 6-2 loss against Team 24 Gamecocks - Bailey (SC) and an 8-3 win over Carolina Titans SC. Aces - Edwards went 1-1 in pool play with a 13-10 loss against the SC Jets and a 12-7 win against the Cleveland Wildcats, but both Aces - Edwards and the Cleveland Wildcats fell to the Silver bracket for Sunday. The Belmont Bombers went 0-2 on Saturday, falling 5-2 against the East Coast Snipers - Clark/Hill and 17-1 against the Carolina Titans SC, and dropped into the Silver bracket. The Fuquay Titans went 1-1 in pool play, falling 11-3 against the SC Jets and scoring a 5-4 win over Line Drive, but also fell into the Silver bracket.

In the #4/5 Gold bracket play-in game on Sunday, Rock Solid Red scored an 8-4 win over the Carolina Titans SC. In the #3/6 play-in game, the Port City Rebels fell 5-2 against the East Coast Snipers - Clark/Hill. In the semifinals, Rock Solid Red fell 8-1 against #1 seed Team 24 - Bailey, and the East Coast Snipers - Clark/Hill topped the SC Jets 1-0. In the finals, the East Coast Snipers - Clark/Hill scored an 11-3 win over Team 24 - Bailey to take home the 11u title this past weekend.

4 NC teams (Aces - Hartsell, Carolina Pilots, NSA Creek Nationals, and Spartans - Triplett) competed in the 8-team 11u D3 division this past weekend at the Winter Nationals. The Carolina Pilots earned the #2 seed in the Gold bracket, going 2-0 in pool play with a 10-0 win over the Fort Mill Fury (SC) and a 7-4 win over Team 24 Gamecocks - Comer (SC). Aces - Hartsell scored the #3 seed in the Gold bracket after going 2-0 in pool pay with a 10-9 win over Team 24 - Comer and an 11-6 win over the Fort Mill Fury. The NSA Creek Nationals went went 1-1 in pool play with a 14-5 win over Spartans - Triplett and a 19-1 loss against Battalion (SC), and earned the 4th and final spot in the Gold bracket. Spartans - Triplett topped the Palmetto Reapers 5-4 in their other pool play game, but fell to the Silver bracket for Sunday play.

In the Gold bracket semifinals, #1 seed Battalion scored an 11-1 win over the NSA Creek Nationals, and the Carolina Pilots topped Aces - Hartsell 12-6. In the finals, Battalion blanked the Pilots 8-0 to win the 11u D3 championship.

Open

Two North Carolina teams, the Dirt Devils and Rock Solid Blue, competed in the 6-team 12u Open division at the Winter Nationals. The Dirt Devils went 0-2 on Saturday, falling 6-5 against Team 24 Gamecocks - Latham (SC) and 8-6 against Line Drive (GA), and earned the #5 seed for bracket play. Rock Solid Blue went 2-0 in their pool play games, scoring a 15-0 win over Warhawks Blue (SC) and a 10-8 win over the Beaufort County Bombers (Blue) (SC) and scored the #2 seed for bracket play.

In the #4/5 Gold bracket play-in game on Sunday, the Dirt Devils notched an 8-7 win over the Beaufort County Bombers (Blue). In the #3/6 play-in game, Team 24 - Latham rolled to a 19-6 win over Warhawks Blue. In the semifinals, the Dirt Devils blanked Line Drive 3-0 and Rock Solid Blue notched a 10-5 win over Team 24 - Latham to set up an all-NC finals. In the finals, the Dirt Devils scored another shut out, this time with a 6-0 win over Rock Solid Blue to take home the 12u Open division crown.

4 North Carolina teams including Carolina Stars - Seymour, the Crystal Coast Surge, RBI Raptors - Guise, and Ultimate Performance Black competed in the 6-team 12u D3 division this past weekend. Ultimate Performance Black scored the #2 seed for bracket play after going 2-0 in pool play with a 12-4 win over Carolina Stars - Seymour and an 11-7 win over the Crystal Coast Surge. Stars - Seymour fell 15-10 against the Surge in their other pool play game. Stars - Seymour received the #6 seed for bracket play, while the Surge earned the #3 seed. RBI Raptors - Guise went 1-1 in pool play and earned the #4 seed with an 11-7 win over the Lake Wylie Warriors (SC) and a 17-2 loss against the Camden Diamond Kings (GA).

In the #4/5 bracket play-in game on Sunday, the Warriors blanked RBI Raptors - Guise 8-0. In the #3/6 play-in game, the Crystal Coast Surge edged past Stars - Seymour 8-7 to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, #1 seed Camden Diamond Kings topped the Lake Wylie Warriors 8-4, and Ultimate Performance Black rolled to a 13-1 win over the Surge. In the finals, Ultimate Performance Black's undefeated run came to an end as they fell 9-8 against the Diamond Kings.

#1 Dirtbags MVP finished off their fall season at 24-7-1 with a 4-0 weekend and a title at the Top Gun Winter Nationals.

#1 Dirtbags MVP and Rock Solid Red were the lone NC teams in the 5-team 13u 60/90 field this weekend. Dirtbags MVP dominated in pool play, scoring a 15-1 win over Team 24 Gamecocks - Wilson (SC) and a 7-0 win over Rock Solid Red to earn the #1 seed for bracket play. Rock Solid Red fell 9-1 against Team 24 Gamecocks - Brown (SC) in their other pool play game and received the #5 seed for bracket play.

In the #4/5 play-in game on Sunday, Southeast Baseball Academy (SC) edged past Rock Solid Red 7-6 to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, Dirtbags MVP topped Southeast Baseball Academy 9-5 and Team 24 - Brown scored an 11-2 win over Team 24 - Wilson. In the finals, Dirtbags MVP rode strong defense and pitching to a 10-0 win over Team 24 - Brown.

54/80 Open

All 5 teams in the 54/80 Open division hailed from North Carolina. Walkoff Academy earned the top seed for bracket play with a 5-2 win over Dirtbags Coastal Elite and a 3-2 win over Sandhills Stingrays - Hofstetler. The Cape Fear Mayhem also went 2-0 on Saturday, scoring a 13-2 win over Dirtbags Coastal and an 8-7 win over Gettin Dirty and earned the #2 seed for bracket play. Getting Dirty fell 6-4 against the Stingrays in their other pool play game and fell to the #4 seed for bracket play.

In the #4/5 play-in game on Sunday, Gettin Dirty notched a 15-7 win over Dirtbags Coastal Elite to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, Gettin Dirty scored an 8-3 win over Walkoff Academy and the Cape Fear Mayhem edged the Stingrays 9-8. In the finals, Gettin Dirty completed the comeback from a winless run in pool play with a 17-5 win over the Mayhem.

54/80 D3

6 teams from North Carolina, battled it out in the 7-team, 13u 54/80 D3 division this past weekend. The Travelin' Tor-NATOs earned the #2 seed for bracket play with a 13-4 win over Area Stars - Derick and a 10-1 win over RBI Raptors - Landerl. The Cumberland County Venom scored the #3 seed with an 11-6 win over RBI Raptors - Landerl, who fell to the #7 seed, and an 8-6 win over Area Stars - Derick, who finished pool play with a #6 seed. The Mooresville Biscuits received the #4 seed after going 1-1 in pool play with a 6-5 win over Hammerheads - Purple and a 6-3 loss against Team Xtreme (SC).

In #4/5 play-in game on Sunday, the Mooresville Biscuits notched an 8-7 win over Hammerheads - Purple. In the #3/6 play-in game, the Cumberland County Venom edged past Area Stars - Derick 3-2. In the #2/7 play-in game, RBI Raptors - Landerl scored a 9-6 win over the Travelin' Tor-NATOs. In the semifinals, Team Xtreme blanked the Biscuits 10-0 and the Venom rolled to a 13-2 win over the RBI Raptors. In the finals, Team Xtreme finished off an undefeated weekend with a 6-4 win over the Cumberland County Venom.
