Top Gun Recap 3/31-4/1/18

There were 4 Top Gun sites in action this past weekend. There was some great play this weekend, including a dominant performance by Five Star Carolina – Smith (12u), and a top 20 match up between 10u #7 Belmont Bandits and #19 Carolina Havoc. Here’s a brief recap of the weekend’s games.

Charlotte

9u

SBA Canes – Callahan scored two wins in pool play including a 17-0 win over Carrabus Bandits and a 17-6 win over the MCOC Miners and earned a spot in the finals on Saturday. The OTK Saints also went 2-0 in pool play scoring an 8-0 win over the Bandits and a 6-5 win over the Miners. In the finals, the Canes outlasted the Saints to take a 9-4 win and the 9u title.

The Carolina Astros put on a dominant show in pool play, going 2-0 with a 17-2 win over Elite Baseball EBC and a 13-1 win over Ashe Aces 2025 to earn their spot in the finals in this 12-team age group. The Vision Bandits also earned a trip to the finals with a 2-0 run through pool play with a 17-0 win over the Stealth Elite Thunderbirds and a 6-4 win over Team USA Diamond King. Two other teams went 2-0 in pool play (Copperheads – Russ and Team USA Diamond King – Blue), but were relegated to the Silver bracket final because of runs against. In the Silver bracket finals, Copperheads – Russ topped Team USA Diamond King – Blue 13-6 to finish 3-0 for the weekend.

Elite Baseball EBC went 2-0 with a 9-6 win over the Belmont Bandits and a 8-7 win over Copperheads – Gaffney. The Copperheads also scored a 14-4 win over the Bandits in their other game on Saturday.

#4 Knights Prime Nation went 2-0 in pool play including a 15-0 win over Karolina Kraken and a 10-3 win over Elite Baseball EBC to earn their spot in the final. Elite Baseball notched a 15-0 win over the Waxhaw Cavaliers in their other pool play game which was enough to earn them a rematch against the Knights in the final. In the finals, the Knights again topped Elite Baseball, this time by the score of 9-2.

 

Concord/Locust

#7 Belmont Bandits brought their undefeated record against 10u teams this spring into this weekend. In their first pool play game, they faced off against #19 Carolina Havoc. Havoc was able to get the better of the Bandits in this one, notching a 12-1 win in their opening pool play game. The Bandits bounced back in game 2 with a 12-2 win over Bonecrushers, but it wasn’t enough to earn them a spot in the finals. The Havoc topped Power Cross 17-0 in their second pool play game to earn their way into the finals. The Belmont Bandits – McCarn went 2-0 in pool play with a 7-6 win over Bonecrushers and a 12-2 win over Power Cross which allowed them to reach the finals. In the finals, the Havoc continued their dominant run with an 11-1 win over the Bandits – McCarn.

 

Goldsboro

In the open division, Team 24 Gamecocks – Brown (SC) went 2-0 on pool play with a 18-1 win over the Wilmington Pirates and a 9-7 win over the New Bern Flames and earned a spot in the finals. New Bern also earned a spot in the finals by scoring a 6-2 win over the Sandhills Stingrays. In the finals, the Gamecocks again topped the Flames, this time by the score of 14-7.

In the D3 division, 11u #3 Canes Baseball NC – Hood played up and went 2-0 in pool play with a 6-5 win over the Washington River Rats and an 8-4 win over the OC Sluggers, and earned their way into the finals. In the finals, they face Gettin Dirty, who also went 2-0 in pool play with a 13-3 win over OC Sluggers and a 9-1 win over the Carolina Stars. The Canes came out the winner in the finals, scoring a 5-3 win over Gettin Dirty.

 

Thomasville/Greensboro

The Kannapolis Krushers went 2-0 in pool play, scoring a 9-7 win over the SouthWest Ripperz and a 6-4 win over DiStefano’s Bear Claws, and earned a spot in the finals on Saturday. The Bear Claws were able to finish 1-1 in pool play with an 8-7 win over Dirtbags Gold, which was enough to earn them a spot in the finals and a rematch against the Krushers. In the finals, the Bear Claws were able to flip the script from their pool play game and topped the Krushers 11-3.

Five Star Carolina – Smith went 2-0 in pool play including a 13-0 win over Power Cross and a 20-0 win over the Statesville Muddogs. They faced off against the River City Red Birds (VA) in the finals. The Red Birds scored a 9-3 win over Power Cross and a 3-2 win over Big Game Sluggers 2024 to earn their spot in the finals. In the finals, Five Star continued their dominant run with a 19-4 win over the Red Birds. For the day, Five Star outscored three opponents a combined 52-4.
