Top Gun Recap 2/17-2/18/18

And we’re off! The Spring season started this past weekend with umpire training events for Top Gun. We got to see some good match-ups and competitive games across multiple age groups. Some of the best teams in North Carolina were in action, and several teams tried their hands at new experiences (playing up and age group). Check out our recap of the weekend’s Top Gun action.

As an aside, we may not make a specific post with the final results, but 11u #1 SBA Canes – Ross has reached the semifinals of the USSSA President’s Day Super NIT in Florida and will play today (Monday, February 18th at 10am) with a chance to reach the finals. Good luck to the Canes!

8u #3 Dirtbags Black got their season started off right going 2-0 on Saturday with a 15-13 win over #10 FV Wildcats and a 15-11 win over the Carolina Stingers. The FV Wildcats finished 1-1 on Saturday with a 9-3 win over the Carolina Rampage in addition to their loss to the Dirtbags. The Stingrays also finished 1-1 on Saturday, scoring a 20-5 win over the Rampage.

10u #16 Youngsville Heat went 2-0 on Saturday with an 11-1 win over the OC Sluggers and a 11-7 win over Area Stars – Stanton. The 9u Coach’s Box Broncos had a strong showing playing up in the 10u division on Saturday, also going 2-0 with an 11-3 win over the OC Sluggers and a 12-3 win over the Clement Duck Dogs.

11u #18 Carolina Pilots was the only ranked team in the 11u field on Saturday and they played true to form going 2-0 with a 10-2 win over the Triangle Sports Hawks, and a 20-6 win over the Carolina Pirates.

12u #3 Legends Baseball looks like they are picking up right where they left off in the fall, going 2-0 on Saturday with a 13-2 win over the Youngsville Punishers, and a 13-4 win over the Carolina Stars. Legends will again be one of the top teams in the state in the 12u age group.

The Holly Springs Rage went 2-0 on Saturday, notching a 9-5 win over the Dixon Bulldogs and a 7-1 win over the Clayton Cyclones.

The Carolina Stingers continued their strong weekend performance, going 2-0 on Sunday including a 12-7 win over the Wilmington Whitecaps and a 19-4 win over the Rocky Mount Marshals 2028. The Stingers look like they could be a team to watch in the 8u age group this spring.

Dirtbags East got off to a strong start going 2-0 on Sunday with a 11-1 win over Coach’s Box Broncos and a 12-3 win over 8u #3 Dirtbags Black, who tried their hand playing up in kid pitch on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Dirtbags Black they faced some stiff competition in their kid pitch debut and went 0-2 with an 11-10 loss to Coach’s Box Broncos in addition to their loss to Dirtbags East.

10u #6 Dirtbags East started their spring in impressive fashion with a 7-3 win over 1u #8 FV Wildcats, but suffered a 6-3 loss to the Carolina Pilots to finish 1-1 on Sunday. The FV Wildcats also went 1-1 with a 28-3 win over the Clement Duck Dogs in addition to their loss to the Dirtbags. 10u #16 Youngsville Heat went 2-0 again on Sunday with a 16-0 win over the Clement Duck Dogs and a 3-1 in over the Walk Off Academy Warriors.

11u #18 Carolina Pilots was again the only ranked team in the field on Sunday and again impressed going 2-0 with a 6-3 win over a very good Dirtbags East team and a 10-3 win over Triangle Sports Hawks. The Dirtbags went 1-1 with a 6-3 win over the Carolina Stingers in addition to their loss to the Pilots.

In the 12u D1 field, 12u #3 Legends Baseball went 2-0 on Sunday with a 9-4 win over the Carolina Wildcards and a 14-4 win over the Carolina Titans – Wilson. In the D2 field, the Carolina Freedom went 2-0 on Sunday with an 11-7 win over the Youngsville Punishers and an 11-4 win over the Walkoff Warriors.

The Holly Springs Rage again went 2-0 on Sunday with a 5-4 win over the Clayton Stampede and a 4-3 win over the New Bern Naughty Boys. Of note, 13u #6 Diamond Thieves went 1-1 playing up in the 13u division with a 7-4 win over the Carolina Pelicans and a 11-2 loss to the 14u Diamond Thieves.
