Top Gun 10u Summer World Series Recap 2018

7 of the our top 10 teams and 8 of our top 20 10u teams in the state of North Carolina were in action in the D1 10u field this weekend. In addition, perhaps two of the best teams in the state of Virginia in the Virginia Stars - Camp and the Tidewater Horns (D1), as well as two more top 20 teams (D2) were in action this weekend as well. Needless to say, the 10u Top Gun Summer World Series  was one of the top 10u tournaments in the state this spring. Here's a recap of the weekend's games.

D1

Friday Pool Play

12 teams made up the D1 division this weekend in Rocky Mount, including 7 of our top 10 teams. With only 8 teams slated to make the Gold bracket on Sunday, every pool play game was incredibly important for bracket seeding. #2 Canes Baseball NC - Gilchrist started their tournament run on Friday going 1-1 with a 14-3 win over the Tidewater Horns (VA) and a 10-7 loss against the Virginia Stars - Camp after the Stars were able to push across 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning. The Horns fell 8-7 to #8 West Raleigh Blue in their other game on Friday, while the Stars scored a 10-0 win over #5 Dirtbags Black in their other pool play game on Friday. West Raleigh finished 2-0 on Friday with a 7-5 win over #4 East Rowan in their other game on Friday, while Dirtbags Black finished 1-1 after a 4-2 win over #7 Dirtbags East on Friday. East Rowan fell 16-15 against Dirtbags East in their other pool play game on Friday. #9 Dirtbags Platinum started strong with come from behind 8-5 win over #10 NCDB Rivercats, but fell 9-5 to #15 FV Wildcats in their second pool play game on Friday. The Rivercats finished 1-1 on Friday after rolling to a 19-1 win over the Mid Atlantic Pirates, while the Wildcats fell 18-4 against the Richmond Rockies in their other pool play game on Friday.

Saturday Pool Play

On Saturday, the Virginia Stars completed a 4-0 run through pool play with a 7-3 win over the FV Wildcats and a 6-1 win over Dirtbags East, and earned the top seed for bracket play. Dirtbags Platinum earned the #2 seed with a 3-1 pool play record including a 13-2 win over Dirtbags East and an 11-1 win over the Mid Atlantic Pirates on Saturday. The #3 seed went to West Raleigh Blue who also went 3-1 in pool play including an 11-3 win over the Richmond Rockies and a 6-3 loss against Dirtbags Black on Saturday. Dirtbags Black finished 2-2 in pool play and earned the #6 seed after a 3-0 loss against the NCDB Rivercats in their other pool play on Saturday. The Rivercats fell to the #5 seed after a 9-6 loss to the Tidewater Horns, who earned the #8 seed, on Saturday.

Bracket Play

The quarterfinals saw a bunch of tightly contested, excellent baseball games with every game being decided by 3 runs or less. #1 seed Virginia Stars - Camp notched a 7-4 win over #8 Tidewater Horns, and #2 Dirtbags Platinum scored a wild 15-14 win over #7 Richmond Rockies. The Dirtbags fell behind 14-6 after giving up 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning. They battled back, however, and scored 9 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a 15-14 win. #3 Canes Baseball NC - Gilchrist scored a 9-6 win over #6 Dirtbags Black, and #4 West Raleigh Blue secured a come from behind 9-6 win over #5 NCDB Rivercats. In the first semifinal, Canes - Gilchrist broke open a tight 3-2 game with 4 runs in the 4th, another one in the 5th, and 7 runs in the 6th to secure a 15-4 win over Dirtbags Platinum. In the other semifinal game, Stars - Camp rolled to an 11-3 win over West Raleigh Blue. In the finals, the Stars were able to get across 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th and take a 6-1 lead heading into the 5th. In the end, the Virginia Stars - Camp held on for a 7-4 win over Canes Baseball NC - Gilchrist and finished an impressive 7-0 for the weekend, including two wins over the Canes. Of note, Dirtbags East went 2-0 on Sunday with a 9-1 win over the Mid Atlantic Pirates and a 20-10 win over the FV Wildcats to take the Silver bracket crown.
