AAU Recap 11/4-11/5/17

There was plenty of action at the Clemmons and Oxford AAU sites this weekend, despite the competing Top Gun Winter World Series. Several of our top 20 teams at different age groups were in action and here we recap the results.

 

Clemmons

8u

#7 Carolina Vandals were the top team in the 8u field this weekend, and took care of business going 4-0 on their way to the 8u title this weekend. They opened pool play with a 17-5 win over The Outlaws and a 9-3 win over the Kannapolis Khaos. The SW Colts also went 2-0 in pool play with a 10-0 over Cyclones and a 12-2 win over the Kannapolis Khaos. On Sunday, the Vandals topped the cyclones 10-0 and the SW Colts blasted the Kannapolis Khaos 17-2 to set up a match of 3-0 teams in the finals. In the finals, the Vandals lived up to their ranking, blasting the SW Colts 17-2 to win the title.

11u

Although none of our top 20 teams at 11u were in the field, 10u #5 Rawlings Stars was playing up this weekend and went 1-1 in pool play with a 10-0 win over the SW Colts 10u and a 7-4 loss to Select 11u. SW Colts – Chappell went 2-0 in pool play with a 12-3 win over Select 11u, and a 16-9 win over SBA Canes 2025. On Sunday, the Rawlings Stars 10u defeated Select 11u 10-2 in their rematch and Hutters 5-3 in the semifinals. SW Colts – Chappell received a bye based on their pool play performance and defeated the regulators 4-0 in their semifinal game. In the finals, SW Colts – Chappell dominated Rawlings Stars 10u en route to a 10-0 win and the 11u championship.

 

Oxford

8u

The 8u field was 3 team field with the Virginia Squires, Garner Express, and the Granville Rays. In the end, Garner Express won the title, going 3-1 in this double-round robin format where each team played each other twice. The Express lost their first game to the Granville Rays 9-8, then reeled off three consecutive wins over the Virginia Squires twice (10-7 and 12-4) and the Granville Rays (10-6). The Rays went 2-2 for the weekend with one win and one loss to the Virginia Squires (9-8 loss and a 13-3 win) in addition to their 1-1 record against the Express.

9u

#16 GBI Express was the top ranked team in the 9u field in Oxford this past weekend. They went 2-0 in pool play with a 10-0 over the OC Crushers and a 16-1 win over the Carolina Flash. MVP Red also went 2-0 in pool play with a 15-0 win over the Carolina Tide and a 6-3 win over the Carolina Thunder. Western Tidewater also went 2-0 in pool play with a 18-4 win over the Carolina Tide and a 14-4 win over the OC Crushers. On Sunday, GBI Express topped the Carolina Thunder 8-5 in one semifinal while Western Tidewater edged MVP Red 6-4 in the other semifinal. In a tightly contested finals match up, it was GBI Express who snuck past Western Tidewater 7-6 to take home the 9u title in Oxford.

10u

Although none of our top 20 were in the 10u field in Oxford, it was still a very competitive division. The Carolina Outlaws went 1-1 in pool play with a 12-2 loss to the Virginia Squires and a 13-3 win over the Carolina Red Sox – Koontz. The East Chatham Renegades also went 1-1 in pool play with a 9-5 loss to the Carolina Tide and a 13-3 win over the Carolina Red Sox – Koontz. The Carolina Tide were 2-0 in pool play with a 10-2 win over the Squires, in addition to their win over the Renegades. On Sunday, the Outlaws defeated the Red Sox 14-4 to set up a semifinal against the Tide. In the semifinals, the Outlaws beat the Tide 9-3 and the Renegades topped the Squires 13-10 to reach the finals. In the finals, the Outlaws rolled past the Renegades 11-3 to finish 4-1 for the weekend and win the 10u championship.

11u

Similar to the 10u age group, although none of our top 20 were in the 11u field, there were still several very competitive clubs that made this an exciting division. The Walk Off Warriors went 2-0 in pool play with a 10-8 win over the Orange County Crushers and a 5-4 win over the North Wake Shockwave. The Shockwave also notched a 11-3 over the Orange County Crushers to go 1-1 in pool play. FBI Fungo also went 1-1 in pool play with a 17-2 win over MVP Athletics Black and a 8-0 loss to the Carolina Titans. The Titans went 2-0 in pool play with a 9-4 win over Garner Baseball in addition to their win over FBI Fungo. In bracket play, the Shockwave beat Garner Baseball 8-5 to reach the semifinals against the Walk Off Warriors. In the other quarterfinal game, FBI Fungo beat the Zebulon Cougars to reach the semifinals were they faced the Carolina Titans. In the semifinals, it was the North Wake Shockwave over the Walk Off Warriors 8-0 and FBI Fungo who edged out the Carolina Titans 3-2. In the finals, FBI Fungo outlasted the Shockwave 8-2 to take home the 11u crown.

12u

The Phoenix Elite opened up pool play with a 2-0 record with wins over the Durham Blues (10-2) and the Cary Wildcats (10-2). The Blues went 1-1 with a 10-0 win over the Clayton Stampede in addition to their loss to Phoenix Elite. On Sunday, the Durham Blues topped the Riptide 8-4 in one semifinal, while the Phoenix Elite blasted the Clayton Stampede 16-0 in the other semifinal. In the finals, the Phoenix Elite again rolled over the Blues, this time by the score of 12-2, to win the 12u championship.

13u

The North Wake Bandits went 2-0 in pool play with an 8-5 win over MVP Black and a 6-4 win over the Granville Crushers. The Orange County Crushers also went 2-0 in pool play with a 13-9 win over the North Wake Thunder and a 10-0 win over Team Velo. The Thunder finished 1-1 in pool play with a 12-5 win over the West Raleigh Predators in addition to their loss to the Orange County Crushers. On Sunday, in the quarterfinals it was the Five Star Wildcats over the Granville Crushers 7-4, the North Wake Bandits over MVP Black 4-2, the Thunder over Team Velo 17-5, and the Orange County Crushers over the Predators 5-4. In the semifinals, the Five Star Wildcats topped the North Wake Bandits 13-8 and the North Wake Thunder beat the Orange Crushers 15-7 to reach the finals. In the finals, the Thunder edged out the Wildcats 7-5 to win the 13u championship in Oxford.
