9u End of Season Rankings Recap 2018-2019

The 9u age group saw two teams, SBA Premier and Dirtbags Black, really separate themselves as perhaps the two best teams in North Carolina this fall. Beyond those two, there were some surprises as well as strong performances by teams who were highly ranked as 8u teams. Here we provide a recap and rationale for our final 9u rankings this fall.

  1. SBA Futures

The 9u age group turned out to be a runaway for the top spot with the SBA Futures dominating the age group this past year. They went 58-14-1 overall this past year, including 41-9-1 this past spring. They scored tournament wins at both the Fall and Spring USSSA Beast of the East Super NITs, and of their 14 losses only 4 came against 9u competition. It gets even more impressive than that: 2 of their losses came against the team who finished #1 in the USSSA 9u Majors National Power Rankings (Traction Canes Black; LA) with their other two 9u losses coming to teams who finished 27th (Line Drive Black; GA) and 56th (Chet Lemon's Juice Corns Jr.; FL) in USSSA's National Power Rankings. They notched wins over teams ranked 1st Traction Canes Black), 13th (Hollywood Heat; FL), 19th Motor City Hit Dogs - Hammond; MI [x2]), 40th (Smithville Scrappers; IN), 58th (Gem City Throwbacks; OH), and 60th (Elite Squad; FL) in the final USSSA 9u Majors National Power Rankings. They also notched wins our North Carolina #3 Dirtbags Black (x3), #4 Five Star Carolina - Young, #8 East Rowan (x2), #9 Triple Crown Lookouts, #12 LBC Vipers (x4), and #17 Ultimate Performance Black Sox. Needless to say, this was one of the more impressive performances by any team in any age group this past year.

  2. Canes Baseball NC - Harris

The Canes have been one of the top teams in North Carolina in this age group since they were 8's, finishing #3 in our final rankings last year. They finished 35-7 this spring and 46-12 overall this past year. They notched 14 wins over top 20 teams from North Carolina including a 2-2 record against #3 Dirtbags Black, wins over #4 Five Star Carolina - Young, #5 HPT HiToms (x2), #6 West Raleigh Blue (x2), #7 NCABC Fungo - Piscorik (x3), #8 East Rowan, #14 East Coast Elite, and #20 NCDB Rivercats (x2). It was a tight race for #2 between the Canes and Dirtbags Black. In the end, we viewed the Canes' title at the Top Gun Summer World Series that included two wins over Dirtbags Black as the deciding factor to separate these two great teams.

  3. Dirtbags Black

The Dirtbags were neck-and-neck with Canes Baseball NC - Harris all year, posting a 34-7-1 record this spring, and a 58-9-1 overall record this past year. They went 6-3-1 at the USSSA DeMarini Elite World Series in Florida, including wins over teams who finished #8 (American Force 9, TX), #56 (Chet Lemon's Juice Corns Jr.; FL). and #60 (Elite Squad; FL). Two of their three losses at the DeMarini came against eventual champion, national #5 MVP Hustle - Ruiz. In total, the Dirtbags notched 15 wins over top 20 teams from North Carolina, including #2 Canes Baseball NC - Harris (x2), #5 HPT HiToms (x2), #6 West Raleigh Blue (x2), #8 East Rowan, #9 Triple Crown Lookouts, #14 East Coast Elite (x2), and #20 NCDB Rivercats (x2). Of their 4 losses to in-state 9u teams, two came against #1 SBA Premier, and two came against #2 Canes Baseball NC - Harris. As noted above, it was very difficult to separate the Canes from the Dirtbags and in truth, a solid argument could be made for either team getting the #2 spot. As we noted above, we felt the more recent two wins for the Canes over the Dirtbags as well as the Top Gun Summer World Series title for the Canes was the deciding factor for us.

  4. Five Star Carolina - Young

Five Star Carolina - Young went 30-7 this past spring and 49-13 overall this past year. Among the 46 wins, Five Star notched 16 wins over top 20 teams, including 2 wins over #5 HPT HiToms as well as wins over #7 NCABC Fungo - Piscorik (x4), #10 Summerfield Stars (x2), #11 NC Rogue (x7), and #13 Carolina Rockies. Impressively, Five Star won their last 11 games of the spring season, dating back to late May. This stretch included 6 wins against top 10 teams and was part of a run win which Five Star won their last 18 games of the spring campaign. It was a tough decision between the HPT HiToms and Five Star for the #4 spot as they HiToms held a 3-2 advantage in head-to-head competition between the two, but we felt this 18 game run pushed Five Star over the HiToms into the #4 spot.

  5. HPT HiToms

The HPT HiToms were one of the top performing teams in the 9u age group this past year, going 28-14 this spring and 53-18-1 overall. They had 15 total wins over top 20 teams. This included wins over #6 West Raleigh Blue, #9 Triple Crown Lookouts, #10 Summerfield Stars (x4), #11 NC Rogue (x3), #12 LBC Vipers, #13 Carolina Rockies, #16 Asheville Braves, #17 Ultimate Performance Black Sox (x2), and #19 Belmont Bandits. Of their 18 losses, 6 came against 10u competition, with another 11 coming against ranked teams.

  1. West Raleigh Blue

West Raleigh is always a tough team to rank because they generally end up playing less travelball and more Cal Ripken all-stars competition. They posted an impressive record of 37-12 over the fall and spring seasons, including going 28-6 in the spring of 2019. They scored wins over #5 HPT HiToms, #7 NCABC Fungo - Piscorik, #11 NC Rogue, #14 East Coast Elite, and #20 NCDB Rivercats. They also scored wins over excellent Line Drive Black (GA) and Canes 757 - Roach (VA) teams. Among their 12 losses, 6 came against ranked teams.

  2. NCABC Fungo - Piscorik

Fungo - Piscorik is perhaps the best example in the 9u age group of a team continually developing and improving from fall to spring. After posting an impressive 27-9 record in the fall 2018 season, Fungo rolled to a 42-11 record this spring and a 69-20 record overall as a 9u team. Whereas in the fall, Fungo had only 1 win over a ranked team (#20 NCDB Rivercats), in the spring of 2019, Fungo - Piscorik notched 7 wins over ranked teams including #6 West Raleigh Blue, #11 NC Rogue (x2), #14 East Coast Elite (x2), and #20 NCDB Rivercats. Of their 11 losses in the spring season, 8 came at the hands of teams who finished in our top 20 in North Carolina.

  3. East Rowan

East Rowan, much like other teams who play a considerable all-stars slate, presents a difficult challenge for us when it comes to ranking accurately. For starters, its tough to accurately gauge the competition level in their all-stars play, which can vary from excellent to quite poor. Against travelball competition, East Rowan posted an 18-7 record across USSSA and Top Gun play. Within those games, they posted 6 wins against top 20 teams including wins over #2 Canes Baseball NC - Harris, #9 Triple Crown Lookouts (x3), #12 LBC Vipers, and #17 Ultimate Performance Black Sox. 5 of their 7 losses came against ranked 9u teams with another coming against a 10u team.

  4. Triple Crown Lookouts

The Triple Crown Lookouts posted a combined 38-17 record over the past year, including a 19-8 record this past spring. They were one of the more competitive teams in the state this past year, notching 11 total wins over top 20 teams including wins over #2 Canes Baseball NC - Harris, #5 HPT HiToms, #8 East Rowan, #10 Summerfield Stars (x2), #12 LBC Vipers (x3), #15 Kings Mountain Storm (x2), and #17 Ultimate Performance Black Sox. We had them slotted fairly close with #8 East Rowan, but ultimately just behind as they went 1-3 against East Rowan.

  5. Summerfield Stars

The Stars posted a combined 30-25-1 record across all competition this past year. Notably, they played 13 total games against teams in our top 20, winning 5 of them. This included wins over #11 NC Rogue Baseball (x2) and #13 Carolina Rockies (x3).

  1. NC Rogue Baseball

The Rogue went 25-16 this past spring, and 37-25-1 overall this past year. They went up against an excellent schedule, facing off against 14 top 20 teams, including 13 in the top 10. They posted a win over #13 Carolina Rockies to highlight the spring campaign.

  2. LBC Vipers

The LBC Vipers have been one of the top teams in this age group for the past 2 years. This year they posted a combined 46-17 record across USSSA and Top Gun play, including going 24-11 this spring. They ended the fall as our #3 team after going 22-6 with wins over #5 HPT HiToms, #9 Triple Crown Lookouts (x3), and #17 Ultimate Performance Black Sox. They continued that success with spring wins over #4 Five Star Carolina - Young, #5 HPT HiToms, #8 East Rowan, and the Ultimate Performance Black Sox, but their performance seem to fall of just slightly over the course of the spring and they slid a bit in our rankings.

  3. Carolina Rockies

The Rockies were one of the more consistent teams in this age group over the past year, posting a 33-9 record over the past year. They, like several other competitive groups, play on the Cal Ripken all-stars circuit in late spring/early summer. Along the  way, they scored two wins over #10 Summerfield Stars to solidify their spot in the top 20.

  4. East Coast Elite

The Elite posted a 37-16 overall record this past year, including a 21-13 record this past spring. At one point, East Coast Elite reached as high as #7 in our rankings after winning 25 straight games from October 2018 to early May 2019. An 8-13 stretch to end the season dropped the Elite a bit in our rankings. Along their 37 victories, the Elite notched 3 wins over #7 NCABC Fungo - Piscorik.

  5. Kings Mountain Storm

The Storm posted an excellent record of 35-10 overall, including a 24-2 record this past spring. The Storm won their last 16 games of the spring season and posted a win over #17 Ultimate Performance Black Sox this past year. The only thing keeping the Storm from moving higher on our list was their low number of wins over top 20 opponents.

  1. Asheville Braves

The Asheville Braves were a late addition to our rankings this spring. They posted an overall record of 31-14 this past year, including going 25-7 in the spring of 2019. They notched two wins over #18 WNC Line Drive as well as a win over an excellent East Tennessee Crusaders team to support their inclusion in the top 20.

  2. Ultimate Performance Black Sox

The Black Sox, who played under the South Charlotte Cardinals banner in the fall of 2018, went a combined 25-19 this past year, including a 17-10 record this spring. They notched two wins over top 10 teams this past year, including a win over #5 HPT HiToms and a win over #9 Triple Crown Lookouts.

  3. WNC Line Drive

The Line Drive went an impressive 46-19 this past year, including going 24-11 this spring. They didn't routinely get to see the same level of competition as many of the teams in North Carolina, but did post two wins over #16 Asheville Braves this past year to help support their position in the top 20.

  4. Belmont Bandits

The Bandits were a new team this spring and posted a 21-10 overall record this past season. They highlighted their spring with 4 wins over ranked teams, including two wins over #12 LBC Vipers and two wins over #17 Ultimate Performance Black Sox.

  5. NCDB Rivercats

The Rivercats finished the fall season at #13 in our top 20, after going 12-8 in the fall with wins over #6 West Raleigh Blue and #7 NCABC Fungo - Piscorik. This spring they went 15-14 to finish at 27-22 overall, and added a win over #14 East Coast Elite to support their inclusion in the top 20.
