What does your Winter training program look like?

Winter is upon us. For many of us and our children this means other sports such as basketball or hockey. However for most of us involved in youth travel baseball, Winter is also a time of focused, individual baseball training. These programs can vary widely, and it is not always clear how best to approach these months of possible individual training. Here we review some of the data surrounding off-season baseball training, and offer some thoughts on some aspects of Winter training programs.

Who are best baseball programs in NC?

We are blessed as parents, players, and coaches to live in a state like North Carolina when it comes to youth baseball. Baseball can be played outdoors for 10+ months per year and there is a wide variety of options available to pursue for travel baseball. From national organizations who put dozens of players into college each year, to local rec/all-star leagues and baseball “academies”, there are a multitude of options when considering where or for whom your child should play. But with the wide variety of options comes some difficult questions: cost, travel, commitment, professional or family coaching, friendships, etc. None of these questions are easy to answer, and with such a variety of options it may seem very difficult, at first, to know what is right for each child or family. We’d like to spotlight several of these organizations through the state of North Carolina, and offer insights into what makes each organization special. The hope is to highlight several organizations throughout the state and also provide a resource for parents who are considering the options for their child.

Rankings Update 10/18/17

Lots of great baseball was played across the state this past weekend and there were some significant changes made to the rankings. Two new #1s were selected and many new teams made appearances across different age groups. Check out the rankings and read more to see our thought process. Don’t agree with these rankings? Sports specialization or multiple sports? How to decide for your child

There is an increasing trend towards sports specialization at younger and younger ages in America. While the rationale for this has been increased focused training, earlier attainment of the “10,000 hour rule” popularized by Malcolm Gladwell, pursuit of a college scholarship or professional contract, as well as  the competitive instincts we experience as parents and coaches to see our kids “be the best.” We see other kids and teams doing it, so we think our child will fall behind if our children don’t specialize as well. Despite this growing trend, there is ample evidence to suggest this specialization does more harm than good, and multiple academic, physician, and governing sport organizations have come out against this practice.

Rankings Update 10/10/17

Our updated rankings are now out for each age group. This past weekend led to some movement in the rankings across many age groups. We also had several new teams make appearances in the rankings. Below we detail all the relevant results and changes.

How we formulate NC youth travel baseball rankings

One of the features we thought would be entertaining to have on this site was a ranking of teams across the various age groups in the state of North Carolina. This idea, however, has some inherent limitations which make it an exceedingly difficult task to do well. We’d like to be transparent about how we develop these rankings, and also open up the comments for suggestions on how we can do better. With that said, we want to reiterate that these rankings have absolutely no bearing on your team, and they are merely meant to be fun and informative.

USABat, USSSA BPF 1.15, and what the bat standards mean for travel baseball in NC

As most of you already know, beginning January 1st, 2018 several national organizations, in conjunction with USA Baseball, will roll out their new bat standard. This new standard has led to much confusion and consternation amongst coaches and parents regarding which bats will be eligible for play in which organization beginning in the Spring 2018 season. Here we’ll review the old and new bat standard and discuss how these standards will affect travel baseball in the state of North Carolina
